Does Grounding (Earthing) Actually Work? What the Science Says
Grounding — also called earthing — has become one of the most confidently marketed ideas in wellness. Press your bare feet to the soil, or sleep on a conductive sheet wired to the ground, and the earth’s electrons will supposedly quiet inflammation, reset your sleep, and calm your nervous system. The promises are large, the testimonials are loud, and the products are rarely cheap.
This article does what the sales pages usually skip: it looks at the actual evidence and tells you plainly where it is weak. The honest answer to “does grounding work?” is not a clean yes or no. There is a small, genuinely interesting body of research — and there are serious reasons to be cautious about how that research has been produced and promoted.

What is grounding (earthing)?
Grounding, or earthing, is the practice of putting your skin in direct contact with the surface of the earth. In its simplest form that means standing, walking, or sitting barefoot on grass, soil, sand, or unsealed stone. In its commercial form it means lying on grounding mats, sheets, or adhesive patches connected by a wire to a grounded wall outlet or a rod driven into the soil.
The underlying theory is electrical. The earth’s surface carries a mild negative charge and a large reservoir of free electrons. Proponents argue that modern life — rubber-soled shoes, raised floors, insulated buildings — disconnects us from that charge, and that restoring contact allows electrons to flow into the body, where they neutralize reactive oxygen species (free radicals) and, in turn, lower inflammation.
The idea was popularized in the early 2000s by Clinton Ober, a former cable-television businessman, and spread through the book Earthing and a network of practitioners and product makers. That origin matters — not because a good idea cannot come from outside academia, but because the same small group has produced and funded much of the research you will encounter when you search.
Where the popular claims come from
Search “earthing benefits” and you will find a consistent list: less inflammation, deeper sleep, lower cortisol, reduced pain, improved heart-rate variability, thinner blood, faster wound healing, steadier mood. Some of these trace back to genuinely published studies. But two patterns should shape how much weight you give any of them.
First, the literature is small and concentrated. Fewer than twenty controlled trials exist across the entire field, most enrolling only 10 to 60 participants — enough to detect a large effect, not enough to rule out chance or placebo. Second, the same handful of names and institutions recur as authors, and several are affiliated with, or funded by, organizations that also sell grounding products. Independent, publicly funded replication is largely absent.
None of this makes the findings false. It does mean they should be read as early signals from an interested source, not as settled science. Keep that lens on as we go claim by claim.
What the studies actually show
Taken one topic at a time, the picture is consistently “interesting but thin.”
Inflammation and wound healing. This is the headline claim and the one with the boldest mechanism — that electrons from the earth behave like antioxidants inside the body.
Scientific Receipt — Grounding is claimed to lower inflammation and speed healing by transferring electrons from the earth. The most cited review supporting this built its case largely on case reports and small experiments rather than randomized controlled trials, and its authors are affiliated with grounding-research organizations, a conflict worth weighing. Sleep and cortisol. The claim that sleeping “grounded” resets your stress hormones is popular, and it rests almost entirely on one small, frequently cited study.
Scientific Receipt — Sleeping grounded is said to normalize the cortisol rhythm and improve sleep. The original study reported lower nighttime cortisol and better self-reported sleep and pain — but it enrolled just 12 participants, was not rigorously blinded, and leaned on subjective diaries rather than objective sleep measurement. Heart-rate variability and autonomic balance. Heart-rate variability (HRV) is a proxy for how flexibly your nervous system shifts between stress and recovery. One frequently cited study measured HRV before and after grounding and reported improvements that went beyond simple relaxation. It is a suggestive result. It also enrolled 27 people and, like nearly all grounding research, could not truly blind participants, since the setup and sensation of being grounded are hard to fake convincingly. Blood viscosity. A small pilot reported that two hours of grounding reduced the “stickiness” of blood in 10 healthy adults. Ten people cannot establish a clinical effect; this is a hypothesis-generating observation, nothing more. The thread running through all of it is the blinding problem. You can hand someone a sugar pill identical to a real drug, but it is very difficult to convince a person they are grounded when they are not. That single limitation means expectation and placebo — both powerful for subjective outcomes like sleep, pain, and mood — are baked into almost every positive finding. Reviewers who have surveyed the field tend to reach the same verdict: preliminary and promising, but insufficient to support clinical recommendations. Grounding does not cure or treat any medical condition, and no responsible reading of this evidence claims it does.
Grounding vs. simply being outdoors
Here is the distinction the marketing erases, and it is the most useful idea in this article. The disputed part of grounding is the electrical mechanism — the claim that electrons flowing up from the soil are doing the work. The undisputed part is everything that comes bundled with going outside and putting your body on the earth in the first place.
Walking barefoot on grass usually means you are also moving, getting sunlight, breathing outdoor air, and giving your attention a genuine break from screens. Each of those has a far larger and more independent evidence base than electron transfer ever has.
Time in nature is the clearest example.
Scientific Receipt — Time in green space is linked to lower blood pressure and stress. A meta-analysis of 20 forest-bathing trials found systolic blood pressure roughly 3 mmHg lower in forest settings than urban ones — a real effect, but one drawn mostly from short-term, small, cross-over studies conducted almost entirely in Japan. Movement points the same direction. So does standing barefoot on the earth “work”? Plausibly, for how you feel — but the honest reading is that the benefit most likely comes from movement, daylight, fresh air, and unhurried attention, not from a current of electrons. Every barefoot-on-grass study is confounded by exactly those factors, which is precisely why the electrical claim remains unproven while the outdoor-time claim does not.
How to try grounding sensibly
If the idea appeals to you, there is no reason not to try it. The key is to spend on it what the evidence justifies, which is essentially nothing.
- Start with your feet and the ground you already have. Ten to twenty minutes barefoot on safe grass, soil, or sand is the entire practice. You do not need a $200 mat to stand on a lawn.
- Make it a walk, not a séance. Fold it into a slow outdoor walk so you collect the well-supported benefits — movement, light, air — regardless of the electron question.

The honest bottom line
Does grounding work? For the specific, dramatic claims — electrons neutralizing inflammation, a wire to the ground rebuilding your health — the evidence is small, largely unblinded, frequently funded by sellers, and nowhere near strong enough to trust. For the ordinary act of getting outside, moving, and standing on the earth with your attention unhurried, the evidence is much better, and the electrons are almost beside the point.
That is not a reason to sneer at grounding. It is a reason to keep the parts that are free and well-supported and to stop paying premium prices for the part that is not.
